Cheryl has 39 years of experience, unique to one law firm in its finance area. That one law firm has seen tremendous change and growth over the years, from a single office with 35 attorneys to a regional firm with 170 attorneys across six offices in two states. Cheryl was promoted to Senior Financial Analyst a few years ago, after having moved up through the accounting ranks. She works primarily with the Firm’s Financial Operations Team, consisting of the Firm’s Managing Director, COO, Finance Committee Chair, CTO, General Counsel and Controller, bringing clarity to the Firm’s financial results and developing strategies for top line growth. Prior to law school, David worked in the technology industry for a hardware and software manufacturer where he was first exposed to project management, agile and the development software applications for the engineering industry. David has been a practicing lawyer for 25 years, is PMP certified through the Project Management Institute and is certified in the Toyota Manufacturing Production System (Lean). David's legal practice included litigation, transactional matters and the administration of disaster recovery federal programs. David has staffed and managed project teams in Mississippi, New York, Texas, New Jersey and Louisiana. His experience includes the management and oversight of a program legal department that included a team of 11 attorneys and 20 paralegals.
Emily Rushing, JD, MIS Director of Competitive Intelligence
As the Director of Competitive Intelligence (CI) for Haynes and Boone, LLP, Emily leads the intelligence, database, research, and technology teams in supporting client service, competitor and market analysis, lateral recruitment, and strategic growth. Emily and the intelligence team supports the creation, deployment, and administration of new technologies and innovation resources.
Emily has contributed to several publications, including the International Bar Association (IBA), American Bar Association (ABA), bar journals, blogs, and other legal industry periodicals. Recent speaking engagements include: AALL, Ark, SLA, ILTA, LMA, SCIP, and regional and international professional associations.
Emily holds a Juris Doctorate (JD) from the University of Houston Law Center and a Master of Information Sciences from the University of North Texas (UNT). Passionate about legal tech and legal innovation, Evan’s firm won the 2021 American Legal Technology Award's "Law Firm of the Year," and Evan won the 2021 ILTA "Innovative Professional of the Year Award," and was named to the "2021 Fastcase 50 List," recognizing “50 of the smartest, most courageous, innovators, techies, visionaries, and leaders in the law.” Before entering the KM field in 2011, Evan was an AV-rated Big Law partner, having litigated labor and employment matters for a decade. As Vice President, M&A Integration at Litera, Barry Solomon focuses on bringing together acquired legal technology companies, enabling continuous innovation and the delivery of a legal technology ecosystem that helps legal teams win and deliver high quality legal services. Barry was on the leadership team of Foundation prior to its acquisition by Litera.
Barry practiced law at Sidley Austin LLP. He left his practice to help found Interface Software, the maker of InterAction. When LexisNexis acquired the company, Barry was retained as vice president and general manager for several subsidiaries of LexisNexis, winning the Leadership Excellence Award. Prior to joining the Foundation team, Barry was Chief Marketing Officer for Microsystems (now Litera), and then for Sidley, overseeing global business development, marketing, and communications strategies.

John Sterling is Chapman’s Chief Strategy and Practice Development Officer. John works with the Chief Executive Partner and the Policy Committee on strategic planning initiatives, with practice groups on practice development and management matters, and Chapman Practice Innovations on strategic growth and business development initiatives, among other projects. John has over 30 years of experience in law firm strategy, practice development and management, and market research. He is the author of two books on law firm strategic planning and strategy implementation; is a contributing editor to Strategy & Leadership, a leading strategic management journal; and is a past president of the Association for Strategic Planning Chicago Chapter, as well as the Strategic Management Association in Chicago and the Strategic Leadership Forum.
Prior to joining Chapman and Cutler, John served as Chief Marketing Officer for a leading intellectual property specialty firm. In addition, John worked for over 25 years as a management consultant, where he helped industrial and consumer product companies, health care and professional service firms, as well as not-for-profit organizations develop strategic and business/practice development plans and address specific practice management issues.
Shawn Swearingen has over 20 years of experience in legal innovation and technology. She is currently the Chief Innovation Officer at the law firm of Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, which has over 1300 attorneys worldwide. In her role, Shawn leads a team of professionals in data science & analytics, business intelligence, strategic pricing and client value, competitive intelligence, client intake, client design services and the Faegre Drinker Legal Design Lab (a partnership with Stanford’s Law and Design Schools). She and her team are responsible for collaborating with the firm’s clients, attorneys, consultants and operational professionals across the firm to identify and deliver on innovative initiatives that are designed for clients, whether that is advancing new and creative ideas, leveraging technology, uncovering insights or creating efficiencies.
Shawn holds a Masters of Library and Information Science, is a Certified Knowledge Manager, is certified in ITIL Foundation and has a white belt in Legal Lean Six Sigma. She was also the recipient of the Minnesota Lawyer Unsung Legal Hero award for consistently going above and beyond the call of duty in the legal profession. Shawn gives back to the community where she serves as a board member to the American Heart Association – Twin Cities and acts as a mentee to emerging technology leaders as part of the Minnesota Technology Association’s ACE Leadership Program.
Lauren Symington is the Chief Talent Officer at Lewis Roca. She is responsible for leading the development and execution of the Recruiting and Professional Development strategies, which includes the recruitment, retention, professional development and advancement of attorneys. Lauren is passionate about leadership and enjoys guiding professionals to meet their full potential. Tricia has worked in law firm libraries for more than 30 years. She started her career while in college as the “kid who shelved the books” and over the years worked her way up the ladder to become a law firm library director overseeing a team of library managers, research librarians, technical services librarians, and library assistants. She currently serves as the Director of Research Services at Akerman LLP. Tricia loves digging for answers and enjoys tackling a challenging research project. She is keenly interested in the latest advancements in automation, data analytics, and knowledge management strategies.
Tricia is a member of the American Association of Law Libraries and serves on the Lexis Advisory Board. She received her undergraduate degree from Oglethorpe University and her MLIS from Valdosta State University. She lives in metro Atlanta with her husband, daughter, and a scruffy but adorable Cairn Terrier named Sammy.
Kelli Wight is the Chief Operating Officer at the mid-sized Toronto-based law firm of Koskie Minsky LLP (www.kmlaw.ca) where she works closely with the Executive Committee and Partnership on the conception, development and implementation of highly-integrated firm management, strategic growth, profitability and governance initiatives. In addition, she oversees the activities of the Senior Management Team responsible for finance, operations, technology, business development, human resources and professional development.
She has 38 years of experience working in the finance, legal and accounting industries in New York and Toronto and served as the head of marketing, business development and strategy at four national Canadian law firms earlier in her career before transitioning into her current role in 2015.
Most recently, Kelli has been leading a dynamic strategic planning process that is actively engaging the full partnership and senior management team, as well as other lawyers and staff, to address evolutionary changes in the Firm's professional and business practice and design the new firm culture in the post-pandemic work environment. Rod has worked in the legal industry for 25+ years and has served in several organizational capacities with positions in sales, marketing, product development, and strategy. In his current role, Rod is responsible for developing market strategy, sales strategy, and alliance models, in addition to managing key business activities in support of product development. Under Rod’s leadership, his team has helped legal professionals leverage technology to improve the delivery of legal services. He is passionate about transforming data to knowledge so that clients routinely benefit from actionable intelligence.
Mr. Wittenberg holds a Juris Doctorate and an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Sociology. He has practiced law in the state of Massachusetts and is a Trustee Emeritus of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation. He resides in the Philadelphia area with his wife Bonnie, and children Max and Ashton. When he's not in the office, you can find Rod at his kids' events, cooking up a new creative recipe in the kitchen or on the golf course trying to improve his game.
Eric Wood is the Practice Innovations and Technology Partner. As a member of Chapman’s Practice Innovations group, Eric works across the firm's offices and practice groups to research, design and develop legal technology tools for Chapman’s attorneys and clients.
Eric’s experience includes developing internal- and external-facing document automation systems, designing custom transaction management, document drafting and contract analysis software, building legal expert systems and leading numerous service design, process optimization and knowledge management initiatives.
Eric draws on significant prior experience in commercial lending and securities transactions, previously working as an associate in the Banking and Financial Services Department at Chapman and the Capital Markets group at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York. Before attending law school, he worked on legal technology and access to justice projects as an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer for Wyoming Legal Services.
